The History of Wagyu

1868 – Meiji Restoration

Crossbreeding begins between native Japanese cattle and European breeds, laying the groundwork for Wagyu.

1910 – Ban on Crossbreeding

Japan stops crossbreeding and selectively develops Wagyu lines for meat quality and endurance.

1976 – First Wagyu Exported

Four Wagyu bulls are exported from Japan to the U.S., introducing the genetics to Western ranching.

1990s – Fullblood Imports

Additional bulls and a small number of cows are imported into the U.S. and Australia.

1997 – Japan Bans Exports

Wagyu cattle are declared a national treasure, halting all future exports and increasing their global value.

Today – Global Demand
